G I S Technical Reports Writing

Overview

Research information has limited value unless it is collected and published in a usable form and presented to those who may apply it. For these reasons never assume that your job is finished when the experimental or analytical phase has been completed. It is also your responsibility as a GIS engineer to show promptly that your results are worthwhile and that you have reason to believe the project will be advanced by your efforts. The only way to convey these thoughts is by writing a good report.

Objectives

This course explains the fundamentals of writing and reviewing technical reports writing, encourage clarity in conveying thoughts into written form, including the stages of writing a report, what's the GIS capabilities of writing a report and Different types of report and how to choose between. Hands-on examples provide an exposure to basic tools, functions and principles using ESRI ArcGIS9.1, Crystal reports software.

Audience

This course is ideally suited for those who use GIS technology, who needs to apply their work in a briefly state the desirable qualities of a good report of the GIS.

Perquisites

This is an intermediate course. Participants should be familiar with GIS concepts. Prerequisite skills may be obtained in Introduction to Geographic Information Systems course

*  Stages of Report Preparation; Including Gathering the data, Analyzing and sorting the results, outlining the report Writing the rough draft and revising the rough draft.

*  Report Format; the requirements for good reports, recommendations for improving report writing style, and presenting data clearly (including figures and tables).

*  Experiment and Analysis Descriptions; the content of various report sections commonly used to describe experimental Report; including GIS tools, Procedure, and Analysis sections.

*   Data Interoperability from the GIS Perspective, and data reformatting.

*  Presenting GIS data in your report; Using GIS maps, images, graphs, and tables.

*  Different designed types of GIS Charts and Graphs.

*  Dynamic Reports Using Crystal report; Report Design Wizard, Data Explorer, Adding GIS Map, and Report Experts for automatic report creation, HTML Preview, .etc.

*  Data Modeling and report relational diagrams Using Visio GIS Project reports.

*  Case studies to GIS Reports samples.
